Prindible's First Collegiate Goal
Staten Island, NY – Two last second goals gave Mount St. Mary's its first win conference win of the season, as the Mount came into Wagner Stadium and knocked off the Seahawks 2-1 in overtime.
As both teams battled the gusting wind from the opening kick, it was the visiting Mountaineers who earned the games first quality scoring chance. On their third corner kick of the first half, a loose ball came to the foot of Sadie Winship who one-timed a shot on net, but Wagner's
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY) was equal to the task to keep the game scoreless.
The Mount had their best scoring opportunity with just less than five minutes remaining in the half when Jenna Stern's corner kick was headed on goal by Keriann McGettigan. The freshman's bid was heading just under the crossbar before Marcy made the leaping save.
The Mountaineers went into the halftime break with an 8-6 shot advantage and having five corner kick opportunities to the Seahawks three.
Wagner opened up the second half heavily tested defensively. The Mountaineers were eager to finally capitalize on their scoring chances, as they began the period offering three shots in the first 10 minutes. Marcy and the Seahawk defense allowed only one to find its way on net though, with the freshman keeper easily making the save.
The Seahawks solid defense transitioned into the teams first shot of the second half as sophomore
Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ) found
Whitney Prindible (Hockessin, DE) on a 30-yard free kick that the senior headed into the top right corner of the goal, giving the Green and White the 1-0 lead. Prindible's header was her first career goal in 69 games played.
The Mountaineers constant pressure transitioned into more free kick opportunities that nearly cost the Seahawks the lead. With just 15 minutes left to play in regulation, another loose ball in the box fell to sophomore Kelly Baker who connected on a right footed shot headed for the back of the net. However, it was Marcy again who spoiled the Mounts chance, making a crucial diving save to keep her team ahead by a goal.
As the clock wound down, the Mountaineers relentless pressure finally paid off. With just 39 seconds remaining, Amy Song's deep throw-in was juggled in the Seahawk box before being picked up and blasted into the right side of the net off the foot of Jenna Stern. The goal marked Stern's first of the year, and gave her team a chance at their first conference win as they headed into overtime.
The Mountaineers last second heroics carried into the first overtime as Song's deep toss again played a contributing factor in the game. In the final 15 seconds, Song bombed a throw into the box that tipped off Marcy's fingers and sailed right to forward Jackie Corley who was awaiting a rebound at the far post. Corley took the ball off her chest and knocked it into the goal to give the Mount its first NEC win of the season.
With the victory the Mountaineers move to 4-10-3 overall with a 1-6-1 record in the conference. The loss drops the Seahawks to 6-10-2 and 2-3-2 in the league.
The Seahawks final regular season home game will take place on Sunday, October 24, when the Green and White play host to Monmouth at 1:00 pm. Prior to kickoff, Wagner will recognize its six graduating seniors who will play their last regular season game at Wagner Stadium.
