May 11, 2008

Box Score

New Britain, CT - Central Connecticut swept today's doubleheader with Wagner taking the night-cap by a 5-2 margin at Beehive Field. The Blue Devils parlayed four Seahawk-errors into three unearned runs.

CCSU improves to 23-20 and 17-7 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while Wagner falls to 23-25 and 14-10 in the NEC.

Despite losing both games, the Green & White clinched a playoff berth with two losses by Fairleigh Dickinson and one from Sacred Heart.

Wagner recorded 10 hits in game two but stranded seven runners as eight of the Seahawks' 10 hits came with two outs.

Starting pitcher RHP Matt Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell) was outstanding in defeat, yielding just one earned run while striking out three and not walking a batter over 7.0 innings. He is now 4-6 on the year.

CCSU scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Pat Epps reached on an error and moved over to third on a Tommy Meade double. Sean Parker's two-out double plated both Epps and Meade.

The Blue Devils extended the lead to 4-0, scoring a run in the third and fourth innings.

Wagner stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first two frames before finally denting the scoreboard in the sixth. Sophomore Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) doubled to lead off the inning. After moving over to third on a ground out, Avella was brought around on classmate Kevin McDonnell's (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) sacrifice fly.

CCSU got that run back in the bottom of the eighth with a run on three hits.

Freshman Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) blasted a pinch-hit home run to right-center for his first collegiate home run with two outs in the top of the ninth to provide the final 5-2 margin.

Sophomore Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) had another big game going 3-5 with a stolen base while extending his hitting streak to eight games. The speedy centerfielder hit .500 (9-18) with six steals and four runs on the weekend. Avella also recorded multiple-hits, going 2-4 with a double and a run while McDonnell was 1-3 with a RBI.

Blue Devil starter John Tessyman (7-3) allowed two runs on 10 hits and a walk over 9.0 innings.

Wagner returns to action on Wednesday, May 14 at 3:30 pm when the Seahawks travel to NYIT.
