March 10, 2006

Box Score

Kissimmee, FL - The Seahawks dropped a pair of game to Holy Cross (4-3) and to Yale (3-0) on their first day of competition at the Rebel Games taking place at the Osceola Sports Complex. Wagner moves to 0-7 with the losses and continue play at the games again on Sunday.

In the Seahawks opener against Holy Cross the bats stayed quite for both teams as missed opportunities left the game scoreless until the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly after a leadoff single.

Wagner would then produce a bases load with one out situation in the bottom of the frame behind a walk, error and a single to center by senior Christy Sykora (Orland Park, IL / Carl Sandburg). Freshman Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) then bounced a hard shot directly at third that the Crusaders converted into a 5-2-3 double play that left the Seahawks scorless.

Holy Cross would then open the game up in the top of the seventh on a two run homer to center by Lally. A pair of infield singles sandwiched a walk loading the bases for the Crusaders, who plated an additional run with another base on balls.

Trailing 4-0 in the last of the seventh, the Seahawks bats finally arrived in Florida. Sophomore Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) led off the final inning with a sharp single to left before consecutive flyouts to the outfield. Freshman Jaclyn Vanore ( Palisades Park, NJ / Paramas Catholic) would move Batistelli over to third with a pinch hit double to right center setting up a two run double to right from sophomore Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Flemington).

Back at the top of the order junior Natalie Stephens (Jackson, NJ / Jackson) lined a single to center before sophomore Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) reached on a fielders choice error that also sent Iwicki home to score. Now down 4-3, Sykora hit a looping line drive just past second that was picked off by the shortstop to end the Wagner rally and the ball game.

Iwicki went 2-3 with a run and the two RBI in the game. After allowing just three hits in the first five innings, junior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) surrendered eight hits for the contests leading to four runs while totaling six strikeouts.

In the second game Wagner again fell behind as Yale scored two runs in the bottom half of the first on just one hit. A fielding error by the infield sent the first runner home, while another came around to score on a balk. The Bulldogs (7-1) then scored another unearned run behind an additional Wagner infield error in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Seahawks bats were held silent through out as they managed just three singles in the contest. The team's strongest scoring threat cam in the top of the first when Stevens single and then stole second with one out. However a strike out and ground out to the pitcher would keep Wagner off the board. Stephens then singled in the third for the Seahawks, but was unable to advance as the next 10 batters went down in order before a one out seventh inning single by Lazarri.

Freshman Cindy Bagonoli (Old Tappen, NJ / Old Tappen) helped keep the Seahawks within striking distance making a diving catch of a foul flyball in left in the third after she nailed a runner trying to stretch a double out in the second inning.

Junior Dara Gadzialla (Edison, NJ / Edison) took the loss going 3.1 innings allowing the three unearned runs on three hits. Hopkins would take over in the fourth after Gadzialla took a line drive off the forearm. Hopkins went 2.2 innings giving up just one walk and 0 hits.

The Seahawks will face Army and Lafayette on Sunday.
