Somerset, NJ – Otis Wright (Fort Lauderdale, FL/ Dillard) picked up his second Northeast Conference Special Teams Player of the Week award this season it was announced by the league office today.
The 5-10, 180-pound speedster wasted no time in staking Wagner to a quick 7-0 lead in the Seahawks' 23-13 Homecoming Day win over Robert Morris. The sophomore running back received the game's opening kickoff at his 10-yard line, cut right and raced 90 yards to a touchdown. The play, which was Wright's second kickoff return for a touchdown this season, put Wagner on track to claim its fifth consecutive NEC victory, allowing the Seahawks to remain within one-half game of first-place Albany.
Wright currently ranks third among all kick returners in Division I FCS, averaging 35.5 yards per kickoff return while Wagner is ranked No. 1 in Division I FCS with a team average of 30.35 yards per return.
In recording their first five-game NEC winning streak since the formation of the league in 1996, Wagner improved to 5-3 overall, 5-1 in the NEC. The five-game winning streak is Wagner's longest overall since 1994 and sets up a showdown with Albany on Saturday, November 3 at 1:00 pm. The Great Danes, traditional NEC kingpins, survived as scare from Sacred Heart before pulling out a 23-20 victory.
Albany at 7-0 overall, 5-0 in the NEC, will enter Saturday's contest one half game ahead of the Seahawks (5-3 overall, 5-1 NEC) in the league standings. Wagner is 1-12 all-time vs. Albany, with the victory coming via a 38-30 shoot-out in 2000. Monmouth's 28-27 win over Duquesne makes Wagner the only team in the NEC with one league loss.
Wright's NEC honor is the fith by a Seahawk this season. In addition to Wright's two special team honors, senior QB
Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) and junior RB
Dominique Williams (Bridgeton, NJ/ Milford Academy) earned NEC Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 1 and Oct. 8, respectively. Senior free safety Patrick O'Connor (Leominster, MA/ Leominster) was NEC Defensive Player of the Week .
