Andrew Bailey concluded his whirlwind rookie year by being named the American League Rookie of the Year as announced by the
Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Bailey, who was the only rookie to be selected to baseball's annual mid-summer classic, was selected first on 13 of 28 ballots and finished with 88 points. Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus was the runner-up with 65 points, one more than Detroit Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello.
"Winning the Rookie of the Year is well deserved," said Wagner head coach
Joe Litterio. "It couldn't have have happened to a nicer, harder working kid then Andrew."
The hard-throwing right-hander capped a meteoric rise from the Double A Midland RockHounds to the Athletics, saving an Oakland rookie-record 26 saves (in 30 chances) with a 6-3 record, a 1.84 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) and 91 strikeouts against 24 walks in 83 1/3 innings over 68 appearances.
Wagner's only other Major League baseball player Curt Blefary also won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1965.
Bailey is one of four former Wagner student-athletes currently in the professional ranks.
Joe Testa (Minnesota Twins),
Kyle Morrison (Washington Nationals) and
Andrew Huebner (Baltimore Orioles) are all also playing affiliated baseball.
