Baseball America founder Allan Simpson ranks hard-throwing righty 10th-best pitcher

Andy Wells (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s / Siena) was named the 22nd-best prospect in the wood bat Great Lakes Summer League by Allan Simpson in association with the league managers and scouts. Pitching for the Xenia Athletes In Action, Wells was third in the league with 42 strikeouts, including a Great Lakes League-best 18 strikeouts looking. He also was ranked ninth with 42.1 innings and went 3-5 while holding hitters to a .253 average.
Wells was 2-4 with 40 strikeouts and a 4.86 ERA over 50.0 innings as a junior last spring. During conference-play, he picked it up going 2-0 with 20 strikeouts and a 1.17 ERA over 23.0 innings. Wells finished the year as the squad's No. 4 starter, yielding just one earned run or less in six of his last seven outings.
The hard-throwing righty played his prep ball at St. Peter’s High School where he was one of the top players on Staten Island.
Also on the list were student-athletes from notable college baseball powerhouses Virginia, Ohio State, Tyler (Texas) JC, Mississippi, Kent State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Northwestern, Winthrop, Dayton and Xavier.
Wells joins teammate
Kyle Morrison (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) in earning summer league accolades, as the right-handed pitcher was named the third-best prospect in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL).
